APE fine tuning in Gap Removal to avoid clipped start of music

Greetings!

I really like the "Remove gap between tracks" feature. I don't have much time to work on my songs (my real job keeps getting in the way), so it's nice to have the system tighten up the tracks automatically.

My challenge is that the beginning of some songs gets clipped off, although the "Start" time appears to be spot-on in the waveform viewer. If I set the "Start" marker about 8 to 10ms earlier (before the first sound in the track) it plays as expected.

I'm wondering if this might be a result of using VBR for MP3s making calculation a challenge?

It would be nice to be able to fine tune the start to compensate and avoid the clipped starts. Maybe a pair of radio buttons, "Aggressive" (works as it does today) and "Conservative" (sets "Start" to 8ms earlier)?

I've been thinking about this for several days, trying to think of a way that it could be included, without making the interface too cluttered or confusing. The radio buttons is the best I could think of so far.

It would also be cool if there was a way to reset all of the APE entries so that the "Remove gap" would have a clean slate to start from.

Thanks,
  Dave

Hello!

I don't think it's something to do with VBR. The gap remover works with decoded data, and doesn't know a thing about how file was encoded...

Are you sure it's just 8-10 ms, not more? I think instead of adding new options - and making software more complicated (the "Settings" window already hardly overloaded with checkboxes and other stuff) - we'll just hard code that 10ms. It'll silently remove 10ms from the "start silence" duration.

For APE tags, I think by default it shouldn't set the "Start" and "End" unless user decide to do so. It's all in request list already and should be done in the RadioBOSS 4.6.

Hi!

Cool background information. Thanks for taking the time to include it.

It really appears to be about 8 to 10 ms. For example, on my copy of "All Through The Night", (Cyndi Lauper) the Gap Remover set the Start to 1.16 - the first note of the opening arpeggio was clipped off. After I backed off the Start to 1.08 the missing note appeared as expected. Based upon the waveform display 1.16 *looked* spot-on. However, during playback the music was clipped.

I should have mentioned in my original post that I have the thresholds set to their minimum levels: -51.7dB for Start and -35.0 dB for End.

Thanks for your consideration,
  Dave

It's 80ms between 1.16s and 1.08s (1s = 1000ms). That's pretty much...

Could you please send the music track to support@djsoft.net so we'll analyze it and try to figure out why it misses out the first note.

Thanks!
